Visual assessment

Through studies completed for the Wilan Wind Farm, a visual representation of the project in the form of photomontages have been produced for the following key public viewpoints:

These photomontages have been generated using digital photographs with ‘wireframes’ and 3D rendered modelling to depict the expected view of the project once operational.

Noise

Noise contours

Dwellings

Modern wind turbines generate some noise however they are much quieter than may be expected. The noise levels at wind farms will vary based on the wind turbine technology, layout, topography and wind speed.

An independent technical noise assessment has been completed for the Wilan Wind Farm. The map shows the decibel noise contours on the proposed project site. Modelled operational noise from the turbines in the studies indicates that all non-associated receivers will be below the 35 dB threshold. For more information on the guidelines relating to noise limits in NSW, please refer to the Draft Wind Energy Guidelines.

While describing sound levels can be complex as perceptions are influenced by multiple layers, the below illustration provides a guide to different sound levels.

As part of the development process for the Wilan Wind Farm, a series of technical studies have been conducted to assess various aspects of the ecosystem. This includes studies on birds, bats and other important flora and fauna.

The selected location is on approximately 16,350 hectares of land, and is primarily used for light to moderate pastoral grazing. The western extent of the wind farm site is located adjacent to the Yanga State Conservation Area (Yanga SCA) which is managed by NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS). Portions of the Gayini property outside of the proposed wind farm area have been restored as floodplain wetlands.

The constraint map displays areas of low, moderate and high biodiversity value. The constraint ranking reflects the potential biodiversity significance of an area. As a result of the ongoing studies, the Wilan Wind Farm has been able to adapt the design and layout of the wind farm to significantly reduce biodiversity impacts within the project site area.

1 in 100 year flood modelling

The project has completed several flood modelling studies for the site. The map shows the 1% annual exceedance probability flood model, which can be interpreted as a 1 in 100 year flood event. The Wilan Wind Farm has been designed to avoid these flood-prone areas and to minimise any impacts to natural waterways.
