Dickson
The ACT Government has committed $3 million for upgrades to make the popular Woolley Street entertainment and dining precinct more accessible, safer and attractive for local businesses, residents and visitors to enjoy.
The proposed design for the Dickson streetscape upgrades are based on extensive community consultation and act as the next stage in the evolution of the Dickson Place Plan.
Designed in collaboration with AECOM these upgrades will support a variety of community events, leisure opportunities and social interactions, as well as improve pedestrian safety and cycling access.

The Central Plaza has been designed to be a comfortable, inviting place which caters for all ages. An inclusive environment with public spaces reflective of the entire community it includes places to sit, places to meet and places to play. Located in the centre of Woolley Street the plaza is designed to slow people down, bringing happiness and life to the area even in periods when shops are closed.
In designing for people first we hope to bring more people into Dickson, facilitating a stronger, safer and more prosperous community for traders and residents. For example, we’ve proposed a children’s water play area that will be a lot of sun in the summer months but also works as irrigation for the adjacent garden beds and will passively cool the plaza when things get hot. Check out all the features on the map and below.
The changes to the Woolley street entries are designed to make walking around safer no matter the time of day. Our plan aims to maintain existing lighting and using new lighting that is aligned to the character of the precinct to create vibrant night-time spaces. We’re also looking to add deciduous trees which will provide shade in summer and allow through the warmth of the winter sun.
The upgrade includes 635 square metres of lawn to provide opportunities for relaxation, play and enjoyment the year-round. The lawns were installed at ground-level for easy access. The new space is great for picnics or just to stretch out and take-it easy. The new deciduous copse of silver birchs and avenue of Japanese elm trees will give life to the lawns, providing shade in summer and allowing sunlight in winter.
