Haig Park
Canberra is known for its large green spaces and parks. At the heart of the City Renewal Precinct, the heritage-listed Haig Park is growing into a distinctive and welcoming destination for locals and visitors.
In November 2020, community members were invited to review and give feedback on a proposed design concept for a new community centre and landscaping in Haig Park, Braddon.
We invited feedback on the suitability of the designs and to discover any potential issues. We also sought to understand community preferences for features of the landscaping.
The proposed designs feature a workshop, storerooms, outdoor work area, meeting room, office, a multipurpose space with kitchenette, and toilets.
Building on your feedback and ideas, the community centre has a simple but robust design that adapts and reuses the former building including flexible spaces that can host activities such as painting, woodwork, playgroups gardening, yoga, and much more.
The proposed new building has a variety of sized meeting rooms, a multipurpose space storeroom, kitchenette, possible office, outdoor work area, with accesible toilets.
There is landscaping with outdoor seating and gathering areas too. Sustainable design is a key feature of the proposal. Applying adaptive reuse and placemaking principles, the former depot building is being re-purposed as a meeting and wet workshop space.
New lighting and paths will be added to improve safety, accessibility and amenity in Haig Park. The design includes new lighting along the east west concrete footpath linking to the north south paths off Lonsdale and Mort Street.
From 2017, the City Renewal Authority has been working to make Haig Park a great place that brings people together through a series of placemaking studies, consultations and experiments. While government has a significant role in the renewal of Haig Park everybody has a role to play. Below are the key projects that got us to where we are today.
