Lonsdale
Braddon is one of Canberra’s most eclectic suburbs. It has evolved over the past decade from being a light industrial area into a vibrant precinct with a mix of new apartments, great places to eat, and innovative businesses and people.
In 2018 - 2019 we worked with the Braddon community to develop the Braddon Place Plan. This includes aspirations for Braddon such as:
a focus on interventions that retain the existing urban fabric and keep it interesting
community hang out spaces, more greenery and street seating
traffic reduction and calming, and more pedestrian crossings to improve safety
more street art and public art, with the emphasis on supporting local artists and arts culture.
Based on these aspirations, we’ve created a draft streetscape design that seeks to make Lonsdale Street more accessible, attractive and safer for local businesses, residents and visitors to enjoy.
We're working to better connect Lonsdale Street with Haig Park and Civic. At the Haig Park gateway, new trees will extend the massive green canopy of Haig Park into Lonsdale Street. An extended verge will create much more space for pedestrians, and reduce the distance needed to cross the road – making it safer and more pleasant for all road users. Zebra crossings surrounded by mass-planted garden beds will make pedestrians the priority and calm vehicle traffic through and near the intersection.
We’re working to better connect Lonsdale Street with Haig Park and Civic. At the Cooyong gateway, an extended verge will create more space for pedestrians, and reduce the distance needed to cross the road – making it safer and more pleasant for all road users.
We’re creating a safer, more appealing Lonsdale Street with softer surfaces and better connections. Zebra crossings surrounded by mass-planted garden beds will make pedestrians the priority and calm vehicle traffic through and near the intersection.
For this project we took a placemaking, people-first approach, tapping into local knowledge and the community's attitudes, aspirations, and feelings about the space.
The Braddon streetscape upgrade builds on the principles of the Braddon Place Plan created in 2018 and the City Precinct Renewal Program (2019). The plans explore and define how people use the spaces, and what improvements they would like to see.
During April and May 2021 we invited community to have their say on a new streetscape design concept for Lonsdale Street, Braddon. We shared the proposed design, information about sustainability features of the project, and a short survey to receive feedback.
This consultation is now closed and we're reviewing the designs based on what we heard.
