The Pacific Highway through Wyong carries up to 36,500 vehicles every weekday. It is also a key transport interchange, connecting bus and rail services for commuters.
The existing highway is highly congested in peak times, impacting journey reliability and safety. There are limited crossing points of the Pacific Highway and Main North Railway, and limited facilities for people walking, cycling and accessing public transport.
Population and employment growth within the Central Coast area is driving increased demand for transport connectivity to, through and within Wyong town centre.
The Australian and NSW Governments are investing $420 million to upgrade the Pacific Highway through Wyong Town Centre.
The project will provide two lanes in each direction along the Pacific Highway, provide new and improved facilities for cycling and walking, as well as improve connectivity to rail and bus services.
Once complete, the Pacific Highway will support future growth and revitalisation of Wyong, improve journey reliability and safety, as well as providing a high-quality urban design outcome for the local community.
Transport for NSW worked closely with the community from 2008 to 2015 to develop the concept design for the project.
An environmental assessment and concept design was displayed for feedback in October 2015, and the project was approved in February 2016.
Work is already underway to make way for this major upgrade – Transport has completed some early demolition of existing buildings and acquired all properties needed.
In March 2022, the Australian Government committed $420 million, jointly with the NSW Government, to move the project ahead.
Throughout 2023 and early 2024, Transport has consulted with key stakeholders and carried out additional traffic studies and assessments to assist with understanding present-day issues.
Transport has been preparing for construction by carrying out essential geotechnical and contamination testing, utility investigations and environmental studies.
We recently presented a refined Concept Design for community consultation. The report is available here.
