The Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan and greater Sydney

In the next 20 years, Sydney’s population will grow by around 1.6 million people and almost 1 million of them will be living in western Sydney.

Major infrastructure projects are in planning and underway right now, to help meet existing demand for transport and services and to cater for the substantial growth ahead.

The Australian and NSW governments are working together to make sure western Sydney has the right infrastructure in place for a vibrant and prosperous future.

A crucial part of this work is the Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan.

WestConnex

WestConnex brings together a number of important road projects which together form a vital link in Sydney’s Orbital Network. They include a widening of the M4 east of Parramatta, a duplication of the M5 East and new sections of motorway to provide a connection between the two key corridors.

M4 Smart Motorway

The M4 Smart Motorway project will introduce intelligent technology, known as a managed motorway system, to Sydney’s M4 Motorway between Pitt Street, Mays Hill and Russell Street, Lapstone. Delivered across five stages, this project will keep Sydney moving. Before each stage of work begins, we will liaise with the community and key stakeholders to ensure everyone is aware of the changes to their journey.

Sydney Metro Northwest

Sydney Metro Northwest will be the first fully-automated metro rail system in Australia. It is on track to open to customers in the first half of 2019. Sydney Metro Northwest will deliver eight new railway stations and 4,000 commuter car parking spaces to Sydney’s growing North West. Trains will operate every four minutes in the peak with at least 15 trains an hour.

NorthConnex

Western Harbour Tunnel

The new Western Harbour Tunnel will take pressure off the Harbour Bridge, the Anzac Bridge and the Eastern Distributor. It will give road users a new route from Rozelle (currently proposed from Rail Yards) in the west to growing employment hubs in the north and north west. It will complement and strengthen the benefits of the WestConnex motorway by connecting directly with Sydney’s northern suburbs.

Inner West Light Rail

The Inner West Light Rail Extension is the first step in the NSW Government’s plans to extend light rail in Sydney. The 5.6 kilometre addition to Sydney’s light rail network opened to the public on 27 March 2014 and runs along the former Rozelle freight rail corridor, adding nine new light rail stops between Lilyfield and Dulwich Hill.

CBD and South East Light Rail

A central element of delivering Sydney’s Light Rail Future is the CBD and South East Light Rail project (CSELR). This new light rail line will extend from Circular Quay along George Street to Central Station, through Surry Hills to Moore Park, then to Kensington and Kingsford via Anzac Parade and Randwick via Alison Road and High Street.
