Snowy 2.0 is a major pumped-hydro project which will increase the Snowy Scheme's generation capacity by 2,000 megawatts (the equivalent of 200 million LED globes running at the same time) and provide large-scale energy storage of 175 hours (enough to power three million homes for a week).
The project will link two existing Scheme dams, Tantangara and Talbingo, through underground tunnels and a new underground power station with pumping capabilities. Snowy 2.0 has been planned to meet the needs of the changing energy market, as the economy decarbonises and intermittent, renewable energy sources come online.
Snowy 2.0 and its fast-start, clean hydro-power and large-scale energy storage will work together with renewables by filling the gaps in energy supply, providing households with reliable, stable and affordable electricity.
