Hume Highway Traffic Improvements Villawood to Strathfield South

The Hume Highway is a city connecting corridor linking Greater Sydney, Western Sydney, Inner West and the CBD. This section of the Hume Highway runs through the Yagoona town centre.

Traffic congestion is increasing on the Hume Highway causing delays and frustration for motorists and public transport, increased pollution with the constant stopping and starting of engines, and negatively affecting the economy through lost time.

Traffic slows at Yagoona due to parked vehicles on the Hume Highway, with travel speeds frequently dropping to below 30 km/hr. This occurs in both east and west bound directions, midweek and on weekends.

Feedback Closed as of 14 April 2020.

Placing our customers at the centre of everything we do is at the heart of our transport service and infrastructure decisions. We will consider your feedback and continue to update you as the project progresses.

The proposal

Implementing new and extended clearways in the Yagoona section of the Hume Highway would improve individual travel times for public transport, private vehicles and freight, as well as improving the reliability of travel times across the corridor.

The new and extended clearways will operate along the Hume Highway from Woodville Road in Villawood to Centenary Drive in Strathfield South from:

  • 6am to 7pm on weekdays (both directions)
  • 9am to 6pm on weekends and public holidays (both directions)

The new and extended clearways will link other clearways in the area, including The Horsley Drive, Woodville Road, Stacey Street and King Georges Road, creating a more reliable movement corridor for all traffic, including public transport.

What it means for the community

Transport for NSW is taking action to help ease congestion and create more reliable journey times on the Hume Highway, while balancing the need for maintaining a sense of community.

1

Implement active transport and placemaking

Enhancing the town centre by improving the connection and accessibility between existing car parks and shops for pedestrians or providing facilities to encourage active transport, such as bike racks and improved pathways.

2

Improve wayfinding

Currently it may be difficult to find the existing carparks in the Yagoona town centre due to a lack of signage. Improving way-finding signage could direct customers to the existing public carparks, while reconfiguring these carparks could increase their capacity.

3

Parking alternatives

We recognise that implementing new and extended clearways will impact those who currently park on the highway. To minimise those impacts, we could increase the capacity of existing public carparks, including changing carpark layouts and seeing where additional parking can be added; or improving amenities, such as tree-planting for shade, and lighting in and around car parks for safety at night; or investigating side street options, such as reviewing existing parking restrictions, including the provision of additional timed parking spaces to assist local business.
