Re-opening of the Rozelle Parklands

We are pleased to announce the re-opening of the Rozelle Parklands 5PM on Tuesday 30 April! Mulch removed from within the Parklands has been replaced with fresh organic hardwood mulch, the areas have been carefully inspected by an independent EPA Accredited Site Auditor and received clearance. 

The Parklands will re-open to the community the picnic and barbeque areas, two sports fields, the large grassy areas, pitches, bush trails, fitness areas, playgrounds, walking and bike riding paths. 

Blue green algae has been recently identified in the wetland ponds. While the ponds are not for swimming or recreational use, to ensure everyone’s safety, we have installed temporary fencing and signage around the ponds while work is carried out to remove the algae. We will keep the community informed of progress and ask that people (and pets) keep away from the water.

With almost 10 hectares of green space, the Parklands are one of the largest open recreation and multi-purpose sporting areas in the inner city, with approximately 14 kilometres of bike riding and walking paths as well as many other facilities for everyone of all ages and abilities to enjoy.

The walking and bike riding paths offers easy connections to Victoria Road, Annandale, Anzac Bridge, the suburbs of Drummoyne, Russell Lea, and Chiswick, connecting people The Bays Precinct and the CBD. 

Other facilities on offer include picnic and barbeque areas, two sports fields, large grassy areas, pitches, bush trails, fitness areas, playgrounds and an amenities building.

The parklands will continue to be enhanced and evolve even after we open. Throughout 2024 we will deliver lighting for the oval and rectangular sports fields, new multi-purpose courts for netball and basketball and additional amenities like changing rooms for organised sports and an additional toilet block near the playground. We will provide an update on the timings and scope of this upcoming work in May 2024.

Replanting in the Parklands and surrounding area

John Holland CPB Contractors (JHCPB) has now completed the removal and replacement process for mulch within the Parklands. Despite careful preventative measures, some plants have been damaged during the period of work. 

JHCPB has started replacing plants that were damaged within the Parklands so the areas will appear as they were pre-mulch removal and in line with the Urban Design and Landscape Plan (UDLP). 

Over the course of the coming weeks, you will see workers replanting throughout the Parklands and surrounding areas including the Victoria Road pocket parks.

Other features include boardwalks, picnic and barbeque areas, large grassed areas for future sporting fields, courts and pitches, bush trails, playgrounds and an amenities building.

The Parklands provides up to 10-hectares of open space that will be one of the largest in the Inner West, planting more than 3,000 trees on the site of old Rozelle Rail Yards and returning this area to local residents. Constructed wetlands and native plants will create an oasis to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

John Holland and CPB Contractors (construction contractors of the Rozelle Interchange) have been contracted to deliver the Rozelle Parklands as outlined in the project’s Urban Design Landscape Plan (UDLP).

Features of the Parklands

The Parklands features a Village Green across from Easton Park, which will be multi-purpose for community-based events and market gardens, as well as organised sporting activities in the future.

An urban forest theme runs through the barbecue areas, picnic areas and playgrounds. This area will also contain wetlands which will allow our community to imagine an atmosphere far away from the city.

To honour the legacy of the former Rozelle Railyards, there also an area with a strong post-industrial feel that ties the Parklands to the natural and cultural history of the Inner West.

Overall, the key landscape design approach focuses on native plants including ground layer massed planting and low shrubs, bulky shrubs and small trees, canopy tree planting (3,034 trees in the Parklands alone) and turf areas.

More than 1600 individual comments were received during community consultation for the UDLP, with 723 official submissions of feedback in 2020. In response, Transport for NSW established the Rozelle Parklands Working Group (RPWG) including local community members, representatives from the Department of Planning, Industry & Environment (now DPE), NSW Office of Sport, Inner West Council and Transport for NSW.

The RPWG was formed to help determine future use of the Rozelle Parklands to ensure it meets local and broader Inner West recreational needs. Recommendations made by the RPWG were then reviewed by the Minister for Planning.

History of Rozelle Parklands

The Rozelle Interchange is built on the site of the former disused Rozelle Railyards, which contained redundant rail infrastructure, waste and contamination. In 1980, the goods line supported by Railyards closed and the site was only used intermittently since. After the opening of Rozelle Parklands, the space is an active multi-purpose area for everyone across Greater Sydney to enjoy.

Reactivation of Lilyfield Road heritage properties

The final vision for Rozelle Parklands is a step closer with Transport for NSW running a Request for Tender (RFT), to occupy two properties on Lilyfield Road at the entrance to the new Parklands.

This follows an initial Expression of Interest (EOI) period in December 2022 which showed strong interest from the local business community about future uses of the properties. This will be a fantastic opportunity for businesses to be an integral part of Sydney’s newest green space and provide a unique experience for visitors and the local community.

RFT applications closed on Tuesday 18 October 2023.

The two properties, have been used by the Rozelle Interchange contractor during construction, will be rejuvenated for use as part of the entrance to the new Parklands.

The Parklands will provide up to 10 hectares of green open space and wetlands and include brand-new sporting and recreational facilities to residents of Sydney’s Inner West.

Future tenants of the properties have a vital role in shaping the overall experience of the Parklands for visitors and the local community.

A tender evaluation process will ensure that the preferred proposals meet the requirements of the Urban Design and Landscape Plan (UDLP) for Rozelle Parklands.
