From 7pm Friday 11 April to mid-July 2025, the existing Falcon Street shared user bridge will be closed for around 14 weeks. This closure is necessary to complete the final stages of work to build the new shared user bridge.
We have kept the existing bridge open for as long as possible while we have been building the new bridge. However, as the two bridges connect into the same location at Jeaffreson Jackson Reserve, we must now close the bridge to complete major works at this location.
During the closure period, bike users and pedestrians will need to use the path along the northern side of the Falcon Street road bridge to cross the freeway.
We need to remove a section of the existing Falcon Street shared user bridge
From 10pm Thursday 17 April to 8am Sunday 20 April 2025, we will set up a crane on the northbound outer freeway lanes to remove a section of the existing bridge on the western side of the freeway at Jeaffreson Jackson Reserve. Once removed, we will be able to connect the new shared user bridge with the footpath on Falcon Street
We are completing work on the new bridge so that we can open it in July 2025
Over 14 weeks, we will progressively complete the new shared user bridge and remove the remaining sections of the old bridge. Work will involve:
demolishing the western connection (‘abutment’) and retaining wall of the old shared user bridge and building the new abutment and retaining walls
removing some trees on the freeway between Jeaffreson Jackson Reserve and Merlin Street
pouring concrete for the new bridge path
installing new lighting, handrails and screening.
The remaining sections of the existing Falcon Street shared user bridge will be removed progressively over the coming months. This work should not impact bridge access. We will notify you ahead of this work once the dates are confirmed.
Temporary detour for pedestrians and bike riders
To carry out this work, we need to close both the existing and new shared user bridges and implement a temporary detour for around 14 weeks, from 7pm Friday 11 April 2025 to mid-July 2025. Please see map below showing the temporary pedestrian and bike user detour. We understand this may be an impact to your journey and we thank you for your patience while we complete this work.
To reduce impacts on bridge users as much as possible, we have:
arranged for traffic controllers to be along the detour to help bridge users adapt to the change
positioned signage at key journey locations
scheduled our work to take advantage of both the Easter and winter school holidays when bridge use is lower.
