Over the October long weekend, traffic volumes are expected to be much lower around Sydney, including on the Warringah Freeway. We are taking advantage of this time to implement multiple lane and ramp closures that we wouldn't normally be able to do during busy weekday periods. This means we can work more productively and save up to 15 individual nights of work.
We'll be working across multiple sections of the freeway and some adjacent roads and intersections, from 10pm Friday 4 October to 4.30am Tuesday 8 October 2024. To find out more about how this may affect you, please read the below information.

What we are doing
With lower than normal traffic volumes on the freeway during weekends we will implement multiple temporary lane and ramp closures along the freeway. This means a lower impact to the local road networks around the freeway than would be the case during normal traffic periods.
The temporary traffic changes allow us to create safe work areas next to, over and on the freeway. This gives us consecutive day and night access to the freeway so we can carry out critical work activities such as constructing the new bridge piers which cannot take place during normal traffic periods.
Expect delays and allow extra travel time while we are working. To help plan your journey, visit livetraffic.com or download the app for live traffic updates related to Warringah Freeway Upgrade.
Reducing our impacts
We understand many of you may be home during this time and that our ongoing work has significant impacts to your day-to-day lives. This has been an important consideration while we have been planning the upcoming work program.
Completing work over weekends also provides a number of opportunities and benefits to the local community, including:
improving construction productivity and ultimately shortening the time our project impacts the community
reducing the amount of overall noisy night shifts required by the project
reducing traffic impacts during peak periods by completing work when the traffic volumes are lower.
October long weekend changed traffic conditions
We will be implementing multiple temporary lane and ramp closures along the freeway to carry out work at key interchanges and on the freeway in North Sydney and Cammeray.
Please refer to the road and ramp closures map above to see the traffic changes that will be in place over the long weekend.
Temporary lanes closures will be in place from 10pm Fridays to 4.30am Tuesday.
Expect queuing and delays at times similar to normal morning peak periods.
Additional lane reductions will be in place on the Warringah Freeway northbound and southbound lanes. Please expect delays and allow extra travel time when travelling on the Warringah Freeway during this period. Your safety is our number one priority, we ask you to please slow down and look out for road workers.

Managing construction impacts
Some of the work activities will require the use of machinery that generates noise, light and vibration. We implement extensive controls to ensure any noise impacts are mitigated as much as possible.
To minimise the impact of this work we will:
turn off machinery when not in use
use acoustic blankets to minimise noise, where practicable
direct temporary lighting down and away from properties
fit equipment with devices to minimise noise, particularly non-tonal reversing beepers
completing noisier works during the day where possible.
If you have any comments you would like to provide on the planned work activities, or if you have personal circumstances you need to discuss with us, we would like to hear from you. You can contact us at 1800 931 189 or by emailing whtbl@transport.nsw.gov.au
For more information on how we manage and mitigate noise, please reference our ‘Managing Construction Noise’ fact sheet.

FAQs
We will continually update this section as more questions arise.
Carrying out the construction work program over the long weekend period will reduce the project duration and overall number of noisy night shifts, resulting in less disruption over the rest of 2024. These works will reduce the need for up to 50 standard night shifts and up to three 56-hour weekend closures.
The overall program of work across the October long weekend will commence from 10pm Friday 4 October and finish at 4:30am Tuesday 8 October.
Most of our night work will take place on the freeway lanes, away from residential properties. Although the work will be noisy at times, it’s not expected to reach the highly intrusive levels that have previously been experienced by the community during some night work events, such as the demolition of the Falcon Street southbound on ramp.
Motorists are advised to please keep to speed limits, follow the direction of signage and allow extra travel time when travelling on the Warringah Freeway. Consider public transport alternatives where possible. To help plan your journey, visit livetraffic.com
