Making travel safer, more connected and easier for everyone

The intersection is currently configured as a roundabout and is one of Sydney’s busiest intersections with around 4500 vehicles using the intersection per hour during peak periods. Transport for NSW proposes replacing the roundabout to a traffic light intersection with more lanes to unlock vital road capacity and keep the increasing number of vehicles who use the intersection every day moving quickly, safely and efficiently.

The new intersection will provide:

additional lanes on all approaches to the intersection and through the intersection
a U turn lane on the Homebush Bay Drive northbound off ramp to allow access onto Homebush Bay Drive southbound on ramp, towards M4 Motorway
a new shared walking and bike riding path along the northern side of Australia Avenue and Underwood Road
coordinated pedestrian activated traffic signals on all approaches to the intersection, except for the Underwood Road approach to make it safer and easier to travel through the intersection
a new signalised shared walking and bike riding crossing on Australia Avenue
new shared walking and bike riding crossings at Homebush Bay Drive on/off ramps
new shared walking and bike riding refuge islands to make it safer to cross, especially for people with restricted mobility and caregivers with prams
relocation further east of the existing Underwood pedestrian crossing and bus stand at DFO Homebush.
