Rozelle Parklands Update - Opening of the sporting fields, pedestrian and cycling paths from the Green Link Bridge

We are pleased to announce the next stage of the re-opening of the Parklands and shared pedestrian and cycling paths.

The two sports fields within the Parklands, as well as the pedestrian and cycling paths connecting the Rozelle Bay Light Rail stop to the Victoria Road underpass, will open to the community from Thursday 28 March 2024 at 5pm (see wayfinding map below).

The stairs on the city side of the Victoria Road bridge will also be open.

The areas have passed the required safety clearances to ensure they are safe to open to the community for their use.

As we are still continuing to work, for the safety of the community and our workers you will see some temporary fencing in place around the Parklands.

We ask that you please refrain from entering the fenced off areas until we advise that it is safe to do so. The map below shows the location of the sports fields and shared paths reopened, as well as indicative positions of the temporary fencing.

Pedestrian and cyclist changes

While work continues, sections of the Parklands' pedestrian and cycling paths will remain closed. Sections will continue to open in stages throughout April and we will advise you of any changes to access as they occur.

Please observe signs and temporary fencing in place and for your safety do not enter closed areas.

As new sections re-open, signs will be placed at key intersections to inform the public of the changes and new routes to help you navigate the area.

Pedestrians and cyclists will be able to access the Rozelle Parklands via Gordon Street, Denison Street and the Green Link Bridge from the Rozelle Bay Light Rail stop. These entry points provide access to the Parklands' pedestrian and cycling paths, as well as the Victoria Road bypass to access the city via Anzac Bridge.

Message regarding shared user paths and detours

While work continues, we kindly ask that all pedestrians and cyclists take extra care when using the current detours in place around the site. Bicycle and scooter riders should maintain a safe speed on shared paths, especially when overtaking pedestrians, and follow temporary signage for everyone's safety.

On shared paths:

  • People riding bicycles, scooters or skateboards and rollerblades are to watch their speed. An advisory speed limit of 10 km/h when overtaking other users such as pedestrians applies.

  • Keep to the left wherever possible.

  • Give way to pedestrians. Please slow down and  come to a stop if necessary.

Please note this message is in the interest of everyone's safety when using shared paths and detours.

New gate access to the parklands

Construction of a new vehicle gate location will occur on Lilyfield Road opposite Ryan Street.

Once constructed the gate will be used to facilitate ongoing works, which includes:

  • truck movements in and out of gates on Lilyfield Road

  • deliveries of equipment

  • concrete works to set up hardstand area for mulch deliveries

  • landscaping works within the Parklands

  • stockpiling mulch

  • turf restoration

Continued night work

Mulch removal and replacement will continue in landscaped areas along Victoria Road and other arterial roads on weeknights over the coming weeks. Non-noisy work will continue weeknights from Monday to Friday. Equipment used to complete this work, such as hand tools and a tipper truck, is not expected to generate high noise.

During the scheduled noisy night work (details of which will be included in our weekly update) a vacuum truck will be used to remove mulch from City West Link and other arterial roads and stored in a stockpile in the Parklands. This stockpile will then be removed from the Parklands and taken to a licenced waste facility. These areas will go through a certification process before mulch replacement begins.

Our priority is the safety of our community and our workers. We are working to a program to ensure we comply with the EPA clean up notice and the SafeWork NSW guidelines.

If you are concerned about contamination in mulch you have at home, or have discovered, please do not touch or remove the mulch. Contact the EPA Environment Line on 131 555 or email info@epa.nsw.gov.au
