NSW Government agencies, including the Department of Planning and Environment present clear strategies for accommodating Sydney’s future population growth. Strategic corridors have previously been laid out by Transportation for NSW. Transport solutions are identified by balancing community, environmental and economic costs versus benefits.
The project’s preferred route is first shown to the community via website and community feedback sessions. The public can offer feedback on the project idea and proposed route.
Likely environmental impacts, including noise, biodiversity, heritage and air quality must be identified and documented here as well as any early community feedback.
A highly detailed civil-engineered design is shown to stakeholders and the community. Is shows ACTUAL project alignments, portal and ventilation outlets. It details HOW community feedback has been used to refine the project’s design.
An Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is placed on public exhibition and provides details of environmental impacts and the project alignment. During this period, stakeholders are encouraged to review the EIS and make a formal submission about the project to be considered by the Department of Planning and Environment as part of its assessment of the project.
Submissions are made by the community and NSW Government agencies during the EIS exhibition period. A Submissions Report and if necessary a Preferred Infrastructure Report (PIR) respond to all issues/concerns raised by the community and other stakeholders.
The Minister for Planning will decide whether to approve the project and issue Conditions of Approval.
The project has been approved and Roads and Maritime procures all necessary aspects of the project through rigorous and competitive tender processes.
Roads and Maritime Services administers the contract and design changes and manages all stakeholder engagement regarding construction impacts. A Construction Environmental Management Plan is assessed and approved by the Department of Planning and Environment.
Roads and Maritime will manage project finalisation and hand over assets and maintenance responsibility before actually closing the project.
Australia’s air quality is good by world standards, according to international comparisons made by the World Health Organisation who set air quality guidelines. Sydney is undergoing an exciting transformation. Currently Greater Sydney is home to 4.7 million people and this figure is set to grow to 8.3 million by 2056. This means we have an opportunity now to plan for the future.
Traffic congestion is costing Sydney’s economy more than $6 billion a year. If we do nothing, this will increase to $14.8bn billion a year by 2030.
This is why the NSW Government is investing $41.5 billion in roads and public transport projects over four years to deliver an integrated transport solution.
Motorways will become more important for moving people and goods around Sydney efficiently. They form the backbone of our transport system. They also provide easier access to jobs and services.
Motorways return local streets to local communities by removing freight traffic and making bus trips more efficient. They mean less time in traffic and more time being where you choose to be.
The NSW Government is progressively building Sydney’s first integrated motorway network - to make every journey easier, faster and safer.
The Motorways Division of Roads and Maritime Services manage the development, delivery and operations of motorways and tollways with our valued partners. Our vision is to create a faster, safer, easier and more reliable motorways network –whether travelling by private vehicle or public transport.
Our commitment is not only to create an integrated motorways network but also to ensure seamless integration with the wider Sydney arterial network to create free flowing, reliable, safe and quality journeys with ease of payment options and way finding that meets our customers’ needs today and into the future.
To achieve this we:
Our tolling business –the RMS E-Toll business –is the largest tolling account provider in NSW with over 1.4 million accounts. E-Toll also manages toll payments and processing functions on behalf of Sydney Harbour Bridge and Tunnel, and WestConnex, and toll settlement processes for all motorways for travel made by the E-Toll customers. We also ensure tolling compliance across the network.
