Sydney is undergoing an exciting transformation. Currently Greater Sydney is home to 4.7 million people and this figure is set to grow to 8.3 million by 2056. This means we have an opportunity now to plan for the future.
Traffic congestion is costing Sydney’s economy more than $6 billion a year. If we do nothing, this will increase to $14.8bn billion a year by 2030.
This is why the NSW Government is investing $41.5 billion in roads and public transport projects over four years to deliver an integrated transport solution.
Motorways will become more important for moving people and goods around Sydney efficiently. They form the backbone of our transport system. They also provide easier access to jobs and services.
Motorways return local streets to local communities by removing freight traffic and making bus trips more efficient. They mean less time in traffic and more time being where you choose to be.
The NSW Government is progressively building Sydney’s first integrated motorway network - to make every journey easier, faster and safer.
The Motorways Division of Roads and Maritime Services manage the development, delivery and operations of motorways and tollways with our valued partners. Our vision is to create a faster, safer, easier and more reliable motorways network –whether travelling by private vehicle or public transport.
Our commitment is not only to create an integrated motorways network but also to ensure seamless integration with the wider Sydney arterial network to create free flowing, reliable, safe and quality journeys with ease of payment options and way finding that meets our customers’ needs today and into the future.
To achieve this we:
Our tolling business –the RMS E-Toll business –is the largest tolling account provider in NSW with over 1.4 million accounts. E-Toll also manages toll payments and processing functions on behalf of Sydney Harbour Bridge and Tunnel, and WestConnex, and toll settlement processes for all motorways for travel made by the E-Toll customers. We also ensure tolling compliance across the network.

WestConnex
The WestConnex Motorway project is currently around 40% complete.
The New M4 Motorway being the first of the three stages of the WestConnex project and is over 70% complete. February 2018 saw the final girder lifted at the Concord Road Interchange and the dismantling of the first specialty built acoustic shed at the Concord Road tunnelling site.
The M8 Motorway is over 50% complete. Thursday 9th April 2018 brought about the successful and smooth installation of the first steel girder for the Campbell Road bridge over Alexandra Canal in Mascot. “Bridge 10” was lifted into position in under 60 minutes following 6 months of detailed planning, tireless effort and precise co-ordination. This monumental job used a 580T ringer crane to rotate the girder 180 degrees and laying onto jacks at each abutment - which gently lowered the girder the final 30mm.
The final stage of the WestConnex M4-M5 Link project team are expecting a Planning Determination by the Minister for Planning within weeks. Procurement for both the Mainline Tunnel and Rozelle Interchange is ongoing.
