Tolling

  • Transport for NSW (TfNSW) facilitates end to end management of the NSW motorways network by overseeing the development, delivery and operations of motorways with valued partners.

Our aim is to deliver a faster, easier, safer and more reliable motorways network for people travelling by private vehicles or public transport.

Toll road operation in NSW is governed through the granting of concessions by TfNSW, on behalf of the State through the requisite Ministerial directions, in respect to each toll road.

TfNSW grants a concession to the concessionaire to operate (including by collecting tolls from drivers) and maintain the motorway for a certain period before handing the motorway back to TfNSW, however TfNSW remains the owner of the motorway at all times.

Some examples of motorways delivered under the model are the Hills M2 Motorway, Westlink M7 Motorway, Lane Cove Tunnel, Cross City Tunnel, Eastern Distributor and the M5 South West Motorway.

Our tolling business –the TfNSW E-Toll business –is the largest tolling account provider in NSW with over 1.4 million accounts. E-Toll also manages toll payments and processing functions on behalf of Sydney Harbour Bridge and Tunnel, and toll settlement processes for all motorways for travel made by the E-Toll customers. We also ensure tolling compliance across the network.

Sydney’s Motorway Network

Sydney is undergoing an exciting transformation. Currently Greater Sydney is home to 4.7 million people and this figure is set to grow to 8.3 million by 2056. This means we have an opportunity now to plan for the future.

Traffic congestion is costing Sydney’s economy more than $6 billion a year. If we do nothing, this will increase to $14.8bn billion a year by 2030.

This is why the NSW Government is investing $41.5 billion in roads and public transport projects over four years to deliver an integrated transport solution.

Motorways will become more important for moving people and goods around Sydney efficiently. They form the backbone of our transport system. They also provide easier access to jobs and services.

Motorways return local streets to local communities by removing freight traffic and making bus trips more efficient. They mean less time in traffic and more time being where you choose to be.

The NSW Government is progressively building Sydney’s first integrated motorway network - to make every journey easier, faster and safer.

About

The Motorways Division of Roads and Maritime Services manage the development, delivery and operations of motorways and tollways with our valued partners. Our vision is to create a faster, safer, easier and more reliable motorways network –whether travelling by private vehicle or public transport.

Our commitment is not only to create an integrated motorways network but also to ensure seamless integration with the wider Sydney arterial network to create free flowing, reliable, safe and quality journeys with ease of payment options and way finding that meets our customers’ needs today and into the future.

To achieve this we:

  • Manage the planning, design, build and maintenance operations of our motorways networks tomeet customer needs and improve overall satisfaction.
  • Keep customers informed about our activities, minimising network disruptions and enabling efficient reliable journeys.
  • Respectfully engage with communities at all stages of our work; and
  • Integrate motorways networks with the broader transport system including arterial roads and public transport.
